LONDON - Wednesday 18th June, 2025: Pixar Art Director, Keiko Murayama, visualised what aliens look like based on the imagination and opinions of the average British kid, ahead of the release of Disney and Pixar’s ‘Elio’ releasing in cinemas this Friday, 20th June.
The average imagined, intergalactic alien lifeform is the size of an adult human, has a large round head, slimy green skin, and a mouth full of sharp teeth. This artist's impression was based on the views of 1,000 six to 11-year-olds – who imagine extra-terrestrials to have two arms and two legs, two large circular eyes, ears that are pointed, – as well as having six fingers and three toes on human-like feet.

More than half (54 percent) of British children surveyed agreed that aliens probably speak their own language, with 30 per cent also thinking they are true linguists, knowing every mother tongue. Being able to teleport (40 percent), camouflage themselves (30 percent), and read people’s minds (38 per cent) were among the top powers they imagined aliens would hold. As 35 percent of youngsters think aliens could become invisible to evade detection and even have their skin change colour based on how they were feeling.
And space seems to be a hot topic in households as well according to the OnePoll.com data, as 82 percent also admit their youngster is interested in all things intergalactic. If given the chance to send a message to space, children confess chatting about exploring the cosmos with an alien was their top topic (51 percent).
Sharing stories with extraterrestrial explorers about their family and friends was something nearly a quarter (24 percent) of kids also wanted to do. With 20 percent happy to discuss their feelings with a new alien acquaintance.

Disney Studios UK commissioned the study ahead of the release of the all-new adventure from Pixar, Elio, featuring a space fanatic with an active imagination and an alien obsession, who sends a message to space before being beamed up to an interplanetary organisation, where he is mistaken for the leader of Earth.
Art Director, Keiko Murayama, the Pixar artist who brought the children’s vision to life said: “it was fascinating getting to create this alien through the eyes of the children who imagined it. We can only hope we’ve done it justice! There’s a whole universe out there, that us at Pixar have had the best time imagining whilst making Elio, and now the people who will get to watch it have had their part in it too”.
Elio Producer, Mary Alice Drumm said: “Our incredible artists designed over 21 species of alien characters for the world of Elio. It's great to hear audiences who will be watching the film on the big screen, have imaginations as big as ours at Pixar.”
For centuries, people have called out to the universe looking for answers—in Disney and Pixar’s all-new feature film “Elio,” the universe calls back! The cosmic misadventure introduces Elio, a space fanatic with an active imagination and a huge alien obsession. So, when he’s beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide, Elio’s all in for the epic undertaking. Mistakenly identified as Earth’s leader, Elio must form new bonds with eccentric alien lifeforms, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions, and somehow discover who and where he is truly meant to be. Directed by Madeline Sharafian (“Burrow” Sparkshort), Domee Shi (“Bao” short, “Turning Red”) and Adrian Molina (co-screenwriter/co-director of “Coco”), and produced by Mary Alice Drumm (associate producer of “Coco”), the film features the voices of Yonas Kibreab as Elio, Zoe Saldaña as Aunt Olga, Remy Edgerly as Glordon, Brad Garrett as Lord Grigon, Jameela Jamil as Ambassador Questa and Shirley Henderson as OOOOO. “Elio” releases in cinemas June 20, 2025.
